Placemaking: Ithemba walkway aka Walkway of Hope

Strategy: Addressing issues of pollution and environmental awareness, the children of the community were involved as we transformed an unsafe walkway cluttered with litter. The walkway was unusable and had become a hotspot for violence within the community. This project combined many mediums and methods; starting with an expert-led workshop on the effect of pollution on the environment. The children were then invited to interpret what they had learned through a creative workshop and performance. The mural artist incorporated these two workshops into the creative process, producing sketches and finally a mural that reflected the community’s perspective of the experience and issue of environmental awareness as a whole.

Impact: The project left the community with a functional and safe walkway. Previously, the walkway was a hotspot for violent crime, with passing school children having been victims of muggings in the past. In addition to this children of the community participated in educational and creative workshops centering around pollution and environmental awareness.
