DEADLINE for submission: 26 November 2021

All of Us – IPAF 2021 Mural by Ilukuluku Collective x Morag Myerscough.

The 6th edition of the International Public Art Festival (IPAF) is coming up!  Adding to the 133 previously painted murals, we are going even bigger this year by adding multi-storey massive public murals to the skyline of the Cape Town CBD and continuing the long-standing community art projects in the historical suburb of Salt River. This will form a showcase of the very best talent within the street art scene, both locally and internationally — an epitome of creative expression for all Capetonians and visitors to enjoy. The murals will draw inspiration from the theme “Humanity” to educate and encourage debate while promoting the arts and our future talent.

IPAF will run from 18-27 February 2022.

Organised by Baz-Art

Proposals for participation in IPAF 2022 are officially open! We are looking for proposals for Public Art Interventions that are public-friendly and respond to the theme of Humanity

Definition “All human beings collectively; the human race; humankind. The quality or condition of being human; human nature. The quality of being humane; kindness; benevolence.”

After close to two years of isolation, fear, economic impacts, and lives lost, the pandemic has shown us incredible hardship; however, it has also demonstrated how much we are connected through shared experiences, through shared caring, longing and kindness. Again and again, we have seen massive acts of compassion. From frontline workers’ dedication, to how we have adjusted to new ways of communication and sharing, to individual actions such as staying at home, wearing masks and taking small steps to keep our own loved ones and those of strangers safe.

It is through these actions that we acknowledge and are inspired by our shared Humanity and connection. We are reminded that despite all these challenges, rebuild, reconnect, reflect, create, and remember our Humanity.

We are looking for BIG ideas that reflect positive and hopeful narratives to add to Cape Town’s skyline and streetscapes, reminding us of daily human connection through creative expression. In the spirit of connection, community, and communal reflection, we are looking for community-driven interactive artworks/events/performances/interventions that are co-created with the public. These communal forms of Public Art should reflect community values and creatively express what it means to be human at a particular moment in time, questioning and invoking new ways of thinking, of being, and creating a space to share voices of all involved.

We’re excited to create, play and reflect together!

Artists are advised to consider the following guidelines when designing their proposed concepts:

– Explorative artworks: we are looking for ideas that explore and integrate art into unusual spaces, create accidental encounters or pose small art gestures.

– Visible and public-friendly

– Collaborative in how they foster dialogue within the community, public discussion, and positive development.

– ‘Humanity’ at the heart of the work: is the work made from community interaction, is it humanity themed, or do the outcomes produce a more humanity-based community or economy?

– Do you want to share your knowledge about urban intervention techniques? We are looking for workshop hosts that can explore and explain ideas from guerrilla gardening to mural painting techniques.

We are open to exploring ideas around activations in all mediums, murals, sculptures, performances, digital interventions, and a range of experiences. Let us know how you want to participate!
