The 2022 National Public Art Conference aims to unite South Africa’s creative sector through facilitating in-depth discussions with leaders in the field. The conference hopes to discuss contemporary topics that affect the sector at large and the current challenges and opportunities faced by today’s creatives.
The 2022 National Public Art Conference consists of different activities, namely 6 roundtable discussions, a seminar series and a street art masterclass.
- The 6 roundtable discussions feature some of the leading experts both nationally and internationally. Come listen to an in-depth discussion between panelists and engage with them during the Q&A. Light refreshment will be served afterwards. Some of the panelists include Bjorn van Poucke from Belgium, Lot Kafesu (Goethe-Institut), Jacquelene Friedenthal (The Embassy of Switzerland to South Africa), Professor Francois Viruly (UCT) and Alexandre Tilmans (Baz-Art)
- The 3 seminars aim to develop up-and-coming creatives’ entrepreneurial skills to ensure that they can thrive in the sector.
- The 2022 National Public Art Conference concludes on Friday 25 February with a one-of-its-kind street art masterclass with German duo, Case Maclaim.

Roundtable Discussions
Roundtable 1: Urbanism and Culture
A discussion centered around taking the local culture into consideration when designing urban spaces and how public art can assist therein to ultimately create a thriving community. Panelists will include Professor Francois Viruly (UCT), Kevin Mutia (ICLEI) and Robin Jutsen (City of Cape Town). The conference will officially be opened to the public by Alderman Smith.

Roundtable 2: State of the Arts: A Reflection on South Africa’s Creative Section
A reflection on the current state of South Africa’s creative sector and the challenges and opportunities it faces. Panelists include Magdalene Minnaar (Cape Town Opera), Mirna Wessels (Spier Arts Trust), Sophia Welz (ConcertsSA/ South African National Youth Orchestra/ Brixton Light Festival), Richard Kilpert (Zeitz MOCCAA), Robin Jutsen (City of Cape Town) and Tebogo George Mahashe (Michaelis School of Fine Art/ Convenor of Connect South Africa).

Roundtable 3: Art and the Cryptoverse
An exploration of art and the possibilities for the sector made possible through the cryptoverse. What do artists need to consider? Which policies can help the creative sector thrive in the digital age? Panelists include Jeanne van der Merwe (Cur8), Jacqueline Friedenthal (Embassy of Switzerland to South Africa), Ahren Posthumus (Momint), Gerhard Human and Takunda Chirema (UCT)

Roundtable 4: Art in the Digital Age
A discussion on art in the digital age and how artists can navigate the new possibilities and challenges thereof. Panelists include Elmarie van Straten (Cur8), Bjorn van Poucke (The Crystal Ship/ All About Things/ Ruby Gallery, Arno Visser (VirtualStaX) and Charl Bezuidenhout (WorldArt).

Roundtable 5: Link Between Art and Youth Development
An in-depth discussion on the incredible potential for personal and social development arts training can provide children and young adults. Panelists include Sbonakaliso Ndaba (Sbondaba Dance), Paul Griffith (V&A Waterfront/ Helen O’Grady Theatre School SA), Lot Kafesu (Goethe-Institut/ Cav’/ German Embassy) and Richard Kilpert (Zeitz MOCCAA).
