A Community-Driven Transformation

Vilakazi Street in Soweto has long been a beacon of South Africa’s cultural heritage, home to Nobel Peace Prize laureates Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Yet, despite its rich history, some parts of this iconic street remain underutilized and in need of attention. That’s where Baz-Art comes in—bringing creativity, community, and collaboration together to breathe new life into the space.

A Vision for Change

With partial funding from Business and Arts South Africa (BASA)’s Supporting Grant programme, Baz-Art kicked off a placemaking initiative aimed at transforming a neglected section of Vilakazi Street into a dynamic and inclusive public space. More than just a facelift, this project is about connecting people, inspiring creativity, and driving local economic growth. Most importantly, it puts the community at the heart of the process, ensuring their voices shape the future of the area.

Community at the Core

The journey began with a Community Gathering for Mutual Needs Assessment, an interactive workshop held at 8031 Vilakazi Street. This wasn’t just a discussion—it was a creative exploration, giving locals the platform to express their ideas and aspirations for their neighborhood. The workshop was designed to be welcoming and engaging, providing resources, materials, and catering to create a space where everyone felt included.

Uplifting the Space — One Brushstroke at a Time

As part of the revitalization efforts, Baz-Art and community members worked together to clean the area and paint interactive games on the ground, instantly transforming the space into a more engaging and playful environment. These efforts not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal but also created opportunities for social interaction and recreation, making Vilakazi Street more inviting for both residents and visitors.

Art as a Tool for Transformation

Creativity was the driving force behind the workshop, allowing participants to visualize their dreams for Vilakazi Street. Through different artistic techniques, attendees shared their thoughts and ideas in an organic, expressive way. Baz-Art encouraged active participation and ensured a wide range of perspectives were heard and valued.

A Shared Vision for the Future

The insights gathered during the workshop laid the foundation for what comes next. Key takeaways included:

  • Defining community priorities—focusing on spaces that need the most attention.
  • Shaping future placemaking projects—using local input to drive decisions.
  • Strengthening community collaboration—building connections between residents and local organizations.

But this project is about more than just aesthetics. It’s about creating a safer, more accessible, and more vibrant space that fosters social cohesion, supports local entrepreneurs, and celebrates Soweto’s cultural legacy.

Looking Ahead

This initiative is just the beginning. The ideas and energy from the workshop will inform future projects, serving as a model for community-led urban transformation. With continued support from BASA and the dedication of the people of Vilakazi Street, Baz-Art is set to turn this vision into a sustainable, thriving public space that reflects the spirit and vibrancy of Soweto.

Stay tuned for more updates as we bring this vision to life—one brushstroke at a time.
