The mural representing some of South Africa\u2019s most well-renowned activist and feminist musicians forms part of a series by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/baz-art.co.za\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/baz-art.co.za\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597128456331000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGMQV2hpXhm23WBo8IRbejzym4imQ\">Baz-Art<\/a>, the largest street art platform in Africa. The artwork and associated music playlist aims to shed light on the current gender-based violence backdrop of SA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The carefully-selected musician artists are women who publicly make their voices heard on matters vital to their everyday lives. These are the feminists fighting gender-based violence, encouraging women empowerment and equal rights in SA. By using these strong personalities, the idea is to give women of all sizes, shapes, colour and sexuality the courage to be themselves and to convey a message to men, that \u201c<em>enough is enough!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melissa Cucci, co-founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/baz-art.co.za\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/baz-art.co.za\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597128456331000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGMQV2hpXhm23WBo8IRbejzym4imQ\">Baz-Art<\/a>, says the main aim of the project was to enable thought-provoking conversations with the hopes of changed behaviour, especially given the recent surge in violence against women. \u201cThe mural serves as a special tribute to women of SA. But most importantly we want it to create positive dialogue and change. By combining art and music, we thought this would make for compelling storytelling, allowing us to share the journey of these powerful women. Street art is a\u00a0good medium to bring about conversations that people often don\u2019t talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mural painted by street artists,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dbongz_one\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dbongz_one\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597128456332000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEGWvCw6tjMatFZ1J9isqBs3QjzjQ\">Dbongz<\/a>, says it was a privilege to be a part of this creation process, \u201cMy art is driven by narratives. The wall \u201cArt of Women\u201d in collaboration with Baz-Art and Platoon Africa was a great opportunity for me to honour women and their beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musicians like SA singer-songwriter,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zolani_Mahola\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zolani_Mahola&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597128456332000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEM4SO3CS51ex1kMPMObPL0sscrSQ\">Zolani Mahola<\/a>, afro-soul sensation,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/NdimNomculo\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/geni.us\/NdimNomculo&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597128456332000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH7kPVrXZejt6AB-QvXaHfEHiwj5w\">Nozuko \u2018ZU\u2019 Mapoma<\/a>, Cape-Town based lyricist and rapper,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kanyimavi.co.za\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.kanyimavi.co.za\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597128456332000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEFCMs8ctk8WdAi11m2jESyc3LM8A\">Kanyi Mavi<\/a>, singer-songwriter,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/milasmithmusic.com\/about\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/milasmithmusic.com\/about\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597128456332000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG32r2hz6nAwv2GwRwYwziXxjXyIQ\">Mila Smith<\/a>, modern afro-soul singer-songwriter,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/ami-faku-imali-interview\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/ami-faku-imali-interview\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597128456332000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEV8CZhJ_YSDNds9NSnYggNpwhz-g\">Ami Faku<\/a>, singer-songwriter,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/msaki_za\/?hl=en\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/msaki_za\/?hl%3Den&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597128456332000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGaVTsBlaitDwvVGOypALJGJz8VIg\">Msaki<\/a>, music charting singer-songwriter,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/azanamusic?lang=en\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/twitter.com\/azanamusic?lang%3Den&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597128456332000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGLI2yAFwqksLHM6rv3OACdkybH-w\">Azana<\/a>\u00a0and singer-songwriter and performer,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoemodiga.com\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.zoemodiga.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597128456332000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGEFQj8Uy8fFJxG4dEEZExkQeIg4Q\">Zoe Modiga<\/a>\u00a0will be featured on the wall, making this one of Baz-Art\u2019s most influential projects to date. \u201cWorking with these resilient women, we\u2019ve been able to combine their music with our art and tell the world their stories. And we hope to inspire other women on 9 August, National Women\u2019s Day by celebrating women like these who stand proud in their beliefs\u201d, says Cucci.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of these artists use their music to create awareness around gender, sexuality and ingrained expectations. \u201cWe believe in the power of street art and recognize the issues women in SA face. By creating real interaction between the public and the wall, we\u2019re hoping to change perceptions and behaviour in a unique way\u201d, says Cucci.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By accessing the mural\u2019s QR code, pass-byers will be able to scan, listen and discover artists via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/gb\/playlist\/the-art-of-women\/pl.54fc804b0a1946e9bdb64f8b1d152114\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/music.apple.com\/gb\/playlist\/the-art-of-women\/pl.54fc804b0a1946e9bdb64f8b1d152114&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597128456332000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEGJ5akn1CJnBFSb9JtzrNjTmXgKw\">Platoon Africa<\/a>, who is also a proud collaborator of the women wall. The music platform has curated a playlist of the featured artists allowing the public to enjoy. The integration of mediums and art make storytelling easy and enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender-based violence can\u2019t be solved by government alone but rather, all societal groups with a vested interest.
